After 14 Seasons, Another Homeland Victory

Written by Tashkent Browncoats at 00:45 20/12-2022

Veteran Rafał Figura has taken another step to cementing himself as perhaps the greatest rider in our teams history. He already scored more points than anyone else, and won the classic Criterium la Grasse a whopping three times. More importantly perhaps, he has been the driving force behind getting our team from the mid divisions to Zyte Division, through the points he scored but importantly also through the money he earned, helping us to build a strong team. Unfortunately, Rafal had never managed to win a race in a division higher than fourth, as by the time we became competitive there, he was already a bit old.

He shares his role as the teams guide to greater success with mentor, former teammate and compatriot Erazm Dębski, who is just behind him on the list with most points scored. While Erazm scored a bit less points and performed at a slightly lower level, he won the Tian-Shen Stone City Cup, which until recently meant two feats Rafal had not accomplished: bringing home a cup (which was the first) and a win in Uzbekistan.

Rafal has tried many times to win a cup or a tour but did never manage, arguably because of bad luck in some cases, despite playing a crucial role in bringing home the Copa de los Andes. However, two days ago he won Dibola - Denau, a race that was on our wishlist since this team was founded. This is only the second time we have won anything in Uzbekistan, moreover it means that Rafal, on his old day, bags a win in division 2.1.

The question wether this makes him the best rider in our history is as difficult as it is ultimately irrelevant. Erazm and Rafal represent two different stages in our development, in which they each played their own crucial roles. For me, it is not a question of who is better, rather it is extremely satisfying that Rafal was able to bag this symbolic milestone in the overtime of his career. His retirement is nearing, but he will retire just like Erazm did: as an iconic rider who will leave behind a much better team than he joined.
